Homeopathy and Plastic Surgery
Interview with Dr. Shirley Madhere
Interviewer: Hello, and welcome to one moment please, I’m with Dr. Shirley Madhere. Dr. Madhere, first of all I want to thank you for joining us. I guess my first question for you is your work as a surgeon and the link to homeopathy and homeopathic treatment. Tell me a little bit about it.
Dr. Madhere: Well, thanks you very much for having me. My link to homeopathy started a few years ago, actually even before that, I am of multi-cultural decent and part of my family hails from France. In France, they are very much into using homeopathy and natural products in order to assist the body to heal. Now, having undergone the training that I have undergone, I didn’t have much exposure to that and frankly, I wasn’t that interested. But, each and every time I encountered a patient who seemed very much convinced and convicted, almost, that this was something that they adhered to, it led me to do my own research. So, I actually went to France and interacted with physicians there. I understand that homeopathy is a natural, integrated, very well accepted aspect of how they practice medicine and it really opened my eyes up a bit more. So, I had experiential research that I preformed, anecdotal experience, then took a homeopathy class and so learned more about it and slowly introduced it into my practice, at least within the limited way that I practice it in my field of plastic surgery. So that’s how my relationship developed with homeopathy.
Interviewer: And you’re a physician who actually combines the two, and looks at both potential ways of treatment. What are some of the uses of homeopathy that you see, that can be helpful for patients here in the United States.
Dr. Madhere: Actually, in my practice of plastic surgery, I like to practice what I call holistically. As you well know, when being operated on on one part of the body, it doesn’t necessarily mean that it's the only part of the body that's undergoing the stress of surgery. It is very much a holistic response to surgery. So, the way that I approach surgery, I like to pre-treat and treat and even post-treat the entire body. I try to prepare the entire body to undergo surgery. So one of the ways I can help to do that, in a complimentary fashion, certainly not to surpass or to replace what has been proven to work in the post-operative period or the pre-operative period, for one of the ways that I use therapies to compliment that healing, is to use homeopathy. For example, I will frequently prescribe Arnica Montana pellets to be taken before surgery to help reduce the incidences of bruising and swelling, and not just for surgery, but for minor procedures, such as Botox and fillers, etc. Even for muscle cramps and sores, I will prescribe Arnica Montana. There’s another homeopathic medication called Bellis perennis, which I like to use before breast surgery in particular. I also use graphites and spigelia or even staphysagria to help get the body to heal scars in a more acceptable manner. So, there are many different medications I may use as a compliment to what I already do.
Interviewer: Now, a lot of people who come to our site will look at the homeopathy section, as well as the other sections, and they’ll be listening to what you say, but where do they learn more about homeopathy? Obviously, they can on this site, but other places that you suggest the people could read and maybe learn about Arnica and those other things.
Dr. Madhere: I think it would be really beneficial for them to go to the Boiron website. And Boiron is a company, where actually they make some of these homeopathic medications and they are a very reputable company, so they may learn about homeopathy through Boiron. That’s bioronuse.com, so B-O-I-R-O-Nusa.com, and they may also go to my website. I've got sort of an online newsletter on my website and they can learn more about homeopathy and natural compliments to healing.
Interviewer: I’m with Dr. Shirley Madhere and I wanted to ask you, Dr. Madhere about your website. How can people actually reach you?
Dr. Madhere: They may reach me through my website at www.drshirleymadhere.com, and it’s all one word, D-R-S-H-I-R-L-E-Y-M-A-D-H-E-R-E.com
